A Dressing Room Makeover and How It Launched My Business

As we all know, social media is powerful. Yes, it can come with trolls, but it also comes with super-encouraging strangers and that is what I experienced in a Facebook community I’m a part of, BoHome. I posted photos of my dressing room makeover and received so much positive feedback. So I did what any person would do—launched an interior design business.

Okay, let me backup. I’ve always loved interior design and creating fun spaces. Whenever I would post photos of projects on Facebook that Alex and I were working on, or people would come over to our house, I always received compliments like, “Wow, your house is so cool!”, “That’s so creative.”, or “I would never think about putting that together, but it looks so good!”. I think I became used to these type of compliments, but when over 2,500 strangers reacted to my post in that group, I went… “huh, maybe I could do this”. And by “this” I mean starting my dream career of being an interior designer.

That is a powerful lesson for people. What you are talented at and what comes easy to you, does not come easy to others. Start paying attention to that, own it and be proud. Who knows, it may lead you to a new, fun business adventure. Okay, now off my soap box and onto the project….

I live in an old house built in the late 1800’s. We have four rooms downstairs with tin ceilings, but this room upstairs is covered wall to wall in tin and it’s gorgeous! Really, this room was some fresh paint, a blush door, a new rug, some storage for all my clothes and accessories and a couple DIY projects: the hat rack and the hanging lamps.

When it comes to organization, I am a butterfly. Cassandra Aarssen from HGTV’s Hot Mess House is a clutter expert and I cannot recommend her Clutterbug Quiz enough! Your Clutterbug is the combination between your visual organizational preference and your organizational method. For me, it’s all about visual abundance and macro organizing, which makes sense why I hate dressers and want everything to be on display! Finding your organizational style will help you when designing beautiful, functional spaces.
