My First Client Project - Two Bedroom Remodels

I will forever be grateful for Shirley. She hired me for my first ever Broad Strokes project—two upstairs bedrooms. One bedroom is a playroom for her grandkids and the other is a guest bedroom. In both rooms we installed a bead board ceiling treatment, touched up the drywall and gave the trim and walls a fresh coat of paint.

The Playroom

The playroom was so fun to do! Shirley wanted it bright and fun. To keep it bright we went with a nice white so the wallpapered accent walls and vibrant trim would be the stars of the space. She originally had the rooms flipped; the guest room was the play room and vice versa. After visiting the space, I suggested we switch the rooms to function better. This way we could create a workspace for the kids with room to play and sleep.

The Bench

I came up with an idea for a storage bench and my dad made it come to life! I purchased these three cool frames at Hobby Lobby when they were on clearance. They had nursery artwork in them, but I just wanted the frames. I took the artwork out and had dad use them as molding on the front of the bench.

The Artwork

I knew I needed a large-scale piece of art for this space, but we were on a budget—so it was time to get creative. We purchased a shower curtain from Society 6 and my dad built a frame to stretch it over like a canvas.

The Guest Bedroom

I wanted this room to feel like a cool, curated retreat. Shirley enjoys Midcentury Modern design and boho styling, so we incorporated both!

For styling we used pieces she already owned as well as new items we purchased. I’m glad I found a home for these vintage brass wall sconces! I have so many things in my storage unit and I love when I can use treasures I’ve found for client projects.

The Faux Headboard

I’m calling this a “faux headboard” because it is not attached to the bed and is more for design than function. We attached a 4x8 wood sheet to the wall, trimmed it out and put this amazing wallpaper on it to create a fun, funky focal point.
